Bio Identical Hormones: What's the "Buzz" all about?
The term “bioidentical hormones” is commonly used but can often be confusing. “Bioidentical” is a marketing term, not a medical one, and refers to hormones that have the same molecular structure as the hormones naturally produced by the body. Many Health Canada–approved hormone therapies are already bioidentical and are available in standardized, pharmaceutical-grade forms.
Compounded bioidentical hormone therapy is custom-made by a compounding pharmacy and is not approved by Health Canada. These products are not considered standard of care and are generally not recommended in place of approved menopausal hormone therapy (MHT) products. Unlike Health Canada–approved medications, compounded hormones are not subject to the same rigorous testing for safety, effectiveness, purity, consistency, and dosing accuracy.
Leading organizations, including The Menopause Society, the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC), and the Canadian Menopause Society, have raised concerns about compounded hormone products. Potential risks include inconsistent dosing, lack of safety and efficacy data, contamination or impurities, and limited oversight.
