What is Semaglutide/Ozempic/Wegovy
Wegovy® (semaglutide) is a once-weekly injectable medication approved for chronic weight management. Ozempic® contains the same active ingredient (semaglutide) but is approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Generic semaglutide products are also becoming available in some markets, potentially providing additional treatment options and improved affordability for some patients.
When prescribed as part of a comprehensive weight management plan, semaglutide can help reduce appetite, increase feelings of fullness, and decrease food cravings.
According to the Canadian Adult Obesity Clinical Practice Guidelines and supporting clinical trials, individuals taking semaglutide for weight management can expect an average weight loss of approximately 10–15% of their initial body weight when combined with healthy lifestyle changes, including nutrition, physical activity, sleep optimization, and behavioural strategies.
Average Weight Loss with Semaglutide:
Approximately 10–15% average body weight loss
Some individuals may achieve 15% or greater weight loss
Best results occur when medication is combined with sustainable lifestyle changes and ongoing medical support
In addition to supporting weight loss, semaglutide has been shown to improve many weight-related health conditions, including blood sugar control, blood pressure, cardiovascular risk factors, mobility, and overall quality of life.
